Ellis Ray Martin passed away on July 18, 2013 at Forrest Manor Nursing Home in Dewey, OK at the age of 79. He was born on January 22, 1934 in rural Washington County, Oklahoma to Edward Oren Martin Sr. and Margaret Ann (Belser) Martin. Ellis Ray attended Dewey schools and lived most of his life in Washington County, Oklahoma.
Ellis Ray is survived by his best friend and companion, Jeanie Baker of the home; sisters, Lydia Marge and Lacy Taylor, and Maxine and Danny Whitson of Bartlesville; children Gala Bloyd, Edward, Charles, and John Martin; Nieces, Barbara Paulsen, Judy Wright, and Bonnie Pullman; nephew Ronnie Bluejacket, and numerous other nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and friends all over the country.
Ellis Ray was proceeded in death by his father and mother; 2 sisters, Imogene Flood and Rose Anderson; and 1 brother Edward Oren Martin, Jr.
Ellis Ray served in the Army and was stationed in Germany. Following his service, he worked with his father operating the Yellow and Checker Cab Companies during the 1960’s in the Bartlesville and Dewey area. Later, he worked for Granger Electric, Superior Welding Sales, TRW, and Phillips 66.
As an avid horseman, Ellis Ray enjoyed training and working with horses. He also taught many children to ride and care for horses. He grew up attending and participating in the Bartlesville and Dewey Round Up Club events. He was active at the Cavalcade Rodeo during the late 60’s and early 70’s, camping out each year and helped support the mission of the roundup club to “keep alive the love of animals and the freedom of the great outdoors–the heritage of the American people.”
Ellis Ray participated in many other activities and was noted for his love of country and western dancing, bowling, fast cars, fishing, and western style guns. He was a member of the Country Two-Steppers club and participated in Relay For Life of N.O.W. for the last several years.
The family is hosting a celebration of Ellis Ray’s life on August 17th at 7:00 p.m. at the American Legion Post in Bartlesville, OK.
A memorial has been established with the American Cancer Society. Memorial donations may be mailed to the American Cancer Society at 4110 S. 100th East Ave., Ste. 101, Tulsa OK 74146.
