John was born to Valentinus ODBIERZYCHLEB and Sophia BOGUSZ. After the death of his father in January of 1868 in Poland, his mother married again to Jacob BUGAJ in September of 1868. Jacob, Sophia, John and his step siblings, Marie and Frank Bugaj, immigrated in August of 1884 when John was about 18. Over the years, John used several different surnames: Bugoz, Gourka, Odbierzychleb, Bugaj and Gurka. He seems to have settled on the surname GORKA. He married Sophia Kwapnowski in 1890 in Duncan, Nebraska. They had five children: Teckla (Mrs. Joseph) Jaworski; Maria (Mrs. Stanley) Paprocki; Victoria (b 1896) who possibly died in infancy; Jim Gourka who married Cecilia Sliva and Anna (Mrs. Alex) Alex Roman of Omaha.
