John De Sousa was born in Springfield, Illinois, the son of Portugese immigrants Emanuel and Mary De Sousa. (Note: the name was sometimes spelled in records as: Desousa, Desouza, Susa, etc.) John was apparently a jockey for a short time, then a clerk in a store, and finally a Chicago policeman. He married Wisconsin-born Carrie Walsh and the couple had two children: actress/singer May De Sousa (1884-1948) and Marvin De Sousa (1891-1921). Both May and Marvin were buried in the same area in Mt. Carmel Cemetery.
