Catherine Dufour, later coined ‘Granny Jones’ by her loving children was born before the War of 1812 in New France on the day of September 15th, 1805. Her father Pierre Louis Dufour began his family at Fort Deroit, later moving down to Frenchtown at River Raisin in a small log cabin across the river from Fort Amherstburg & Malden with his two daughters and Indian wife. Catherine was adopted in 1813 by her Father's second wife Archange Garand after that couple's first child was stillborn. Often the family moved freely across the border from US/Canada.

At the age of 18 Catherine returned from Canada to Detroit and began working as a kitchen cook on Woodbridge St. in Detroit at the Eagle Tavern. It was this Eagle Tavern built in 1830 and closed later in 1865 famous for catering to Ferrymen that Edward met Catherine. After marrying at the Eagle Hotel in 1834 the couple lived sporadically in Detroit, Mt. Clemens and Dearborn Area. Eventually the couple acquired use of the Gordon House on the Canadian side of the Detroit River where they birthed Nancy and Henry their first of 11 children. For about 20 years or until 1854 the family lived in Canada then deciding to move to Grand Rapids, Michigan.
