Raymond the son of Dorothy J. Goeppinger of Duluth Minnesota and Arthur L. Stevens of Milton Vermont enlisted in the US Marine Corps on November 8 1966 in Minneapolis MN. He arrived in Vietnam on January 28 1968 where he was assigned to and served with Company G, 2d Battalion, 5th Marines, 1st MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

On October 1, the 2d Battalion was placed under the operational control of the 7th Marines and on October 6 began to participate with other Marine units and the ARVN on Operation MAUI PEAK in Quang Nam Province.

On October 9, during several engagements with NVA forces some 5 kilometers east, and northeast of Thuong Duc LCpl Raymond John Stevens was severely wounded by enemy mortar fire. He was evacuated to the NSA Station Hospital in DaNang where he died later the same day from the shrapnel wounds he had sustained.
