Davis, John R.- enlisted private August 11, 1861. Died in Montgomery Springs, Va. hospital April 22,1864.

The 16th GA Infantry Regiment [also called Sallie Twiggs Regiment] was organized during the summer of 1861. The ten companies were raised in the counties of Columbia, Elbert, Gwinnett, Habersham, Hart, Jackson, Madison, and Walton (although there were members from other counties). Company H was organized at Gwinnett County, GA and was also known as the "Flint Hill Greys."

John R Davis was enlisted as a private by Captain Richardson at Gwinnett, GA and was mustered into service August 11, 1861. Sent to Richmond, the Regiment was assigned to Howell Cobb's Brigade. John Davis arrived in Richmond, VA on August 17, 1861. They were encamped in Richmond until Oct 20, 1861 when they were ordered to to Yorktown. The Regiment fought with Magruder at Yorktown, Lee's Mill (Dam No. 1), and Williamsburg. They returned to near Richmond. On Jan 18 1862 John Davis was granted a 25 day furlough from 'Camp Lamar' to Georgia.

The Regiment was assigned to the Army of Northern Virginia for the Seven Days' Battles (Savages Station, Allen's Farm, Malvern Hill), and South Mountain (Crampton's Gap).

John Davis was captured (unwounded) at Crampton's Gap on Sept 14, 1862; paroled Sept 16, 1862; sent from Fort Delaware to Aiken's Landing Oct 2, 1862; and exchanged Nov 10, 1862.

He appears on a Register of General Hospital Camp Winder Richmond, VA admitted May 13, 1863 with "Febr Intermitt" transferred May 14, 1863 to Lynchburg.

Died at Hospital Montgomery Springs, VA April 22, 1864.
