Flight Officer Budovsky was a Navigator
aboard B-17G Flying Fortress #42-107159,
serving with the 224th Base Unit Combat
Crew Training Squadron from Sioux City
Army Air Base, Iowa.

During formation flight gunnery training at
Bruning Army Airfield in Nebraska, fighter
pilots made mock attacks on the bombers.
One of the P-47 pilots misjudged his distance
and failed to break away in time and collided
with the B-17. The pursuit fighter pilot, John T McCarthy was killed. The bomber broke up in flight and crashed onto a farm,
killing six of the ten crew members aboard.
Four survived by parachuting to ground.

The B-17 crew killed were:

2nd Lt. William F Washburn , pilot
2nd Lt. Lyle C Baxmann , Bombadier
2nd Lt. Bernard I Hall , co-pilot
Cpl. John E Tuchols , Flt. Engineer
Pvt. Henry C Sedberry , ball turret gunner
