Marvin J. Abts, 83, of Eau Claire, died Tuesday, March 7, 2006, at Oakwood Villa Nursing Home in Altoona.
He was born on January 4, 1923, to Alfred and Mayme (Grossell) Abts in Fountain City. Marvin graduated from Fountain City High School.
He served in the U. S. Army Air Force during WWII from January 1943 to December 1945, where he was stationed in England.
Marvin received his bachelor's degree from Winona State University in Winona, Minnesota. He received his master's degree from the University of Greeley, Colorado.
He taught elementary school for seven years, and then he went into social work with Eau Claire County from 1960 until his retirement.
Marvin married Betty L. Kabelman on June 26, 1954, in Newberry, Mich.
He was a past Grand Knight of Pacelli Council Knights of Columbus before joining the John F. Kennedy Council 1257 Knights of Columbus and American Legion Post 53.
Survivors include his wife, Betty; three sisters, Elaine (Frank) Spika of Fountain City, Rose Marie (Dale) Schmitt of Madison, and Rheda (Donald) Jelen of Green Bay; two brothers, Gerald (Lillian) Abts of Fountain City, and James (Dorothy) Abts of Cottage Grove, Minn.; several sisters in law; and one brother-in-law; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Jerome.
Marvin loved hunting, fishing, and the great outdoors.
Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 11, 2006, at St. James the Greater Catholic Church, with Father John A. Schultz and Monsignor Edmund Klimek officiating. Burial will be at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Fountain City, Wis., with military rites.
Family and friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Lenmark-Gomsrud-Linn Funeral Home and one hour prior to services Saturday at the church. A public prayer vigil and Knights of Columbus service will be held at 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials may be directed to St. James the Greater Catholic Church "All are welcome" fund and the Healing Place at Sacred Heart Hospital.
