Joe T. Cummings, Sr., 89, of Valley Mills, passed away Wednesday, March 8, 2006, in a Temple VA hospital. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday, March 10 at the First Baptist Church in Valley Mills, under the direction of Foss Funeral Home. Graveside services will follow at the Valley Mills Cemetery with full military honors.

Joe was born in Mosheim, Texas, to the late Lee and Mackey (McRae) Cummings. He married Ophelic Goains and they had a son, Joe Cummings, Jr. He then married Una Grace Simmons who preceded him in death in 1986 and later married Opha Faye Turner.

He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran who had fought in Normandy, Rhineland, and also in Northern France. He received several medals, including a Purple Heart, after being wounded in combat. He was a member of the Searsville Baptist Church and a member of the Valley Mills John Armstrong Lodge.

Joe was preceded in death by second wife, Una Grace Simmons, in 1986, and his third wife, Opha Faye Turner, in 1992.

Survivors include son, Joe Cummings, Jr. and wife, Jean, of Meridian; daughter, Patsy Jean Lone, of Morgan; five grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; brother, Walter Lee Cummings, of Whitesboro; sisters, Opal Beers, of Valley Mills, Lola Casimir, of Temple, and Fannie Kleibrink, of Valley Mills; step-children, Linda and Richie Bob: other relatives and many friends.
