Police Officer John Collins, 30, star number 11835, was assigned to the Englewood Station (007 District).
On December 13, 1967, off-duty Officer Collins and his wife were Christmas shopping. They witnessed a man attempt[ing] to break into a car in the parking lot of the Sears, Roebuck and Co., at Kenwood Avenue and 79th Street. Officer Collins was shot after chasing the man into a nearby gangway in an effort to apprehend him. Officer Collins succumbed to his wound at Jackson Park Hospital on December 15, 1967.
Officer Collins’ funeral mass was held at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church, and he was laid to rest in St. Mary Cemetery. He was survived by his wife Barbara and son Robert, Jr.
