Was En Route To Hallowe'en Party at School In East End

Mrs. Ruth Brown, 38, Struck While Walking With Two Children and Mother Along Boulevard

Critically injured last night about 7:30 o'clock when hit by a truck while en route with her mother and two children to a Hallowe'en party, Mrs. Ruth Brown, 38, of 621 East Atlantic avenue, died later at 9:50 o'clock at Altoona hospital.

Hospital interne told Coroner Chester C. Rothrock the victim suffered from internal injuries and a possible lung puncture.

The accident occurred at Pleasant Valley avenue and Sheridan street, city police said, where Mrs. Brown, her two children, Pauline 10, and William, 12, and her mother Mrs. H.H. Colyer 112 East Fifth avenue, were on their way to the East End school to attend a Hallowe'en party.

The truck driver, Chester Dewald of Montgomery, Pa., who was traveling westward to Pittsburg with the truck's owner, Hughey L. Woodring, told police he was blined by lights of oncoming traffic and failed to see Mrs. Brown until she appeared off the right of the cab, the corner of which struck her.

Before Mrs. Brown's death, Dewald was permitted to continue to Pittsburg with his cargo, since it was not determined how critical her injuries were. Police said he would be picked up today and be brought back to Altoona for questioning.

Police said Dewald believed the victim was walking on the highway edge and due to a dark dress she wore she was undistinguishable. She was struck in the back.

It was learned that Mrs. Brown, her mother and children, had planned stopping at the home of Mrs. Lloyd Stambaugh, 424 East Pleasant Valley avenue, who was expected to join the group and be taken to the school in Mr. Stambaugh's car.

Mr. Stambaugh, accompained by Dewald and Wilbur Brown, husband of the victim, brought her to the hospital, an attendant said.
