Son of Elihu Wolcott. Family moved to this area Nov. 5, 1830. Elizur was 13 years old at the time.

Graduated Yale College in 1839. At college, he became friends with Donald G. Mitchell, a well-known author. After college, he tried working as sailor, sailing one trip to England, then quitting. Next he tried farming, and then worked as superintendent for the division of the Wabash railroad. After suffering a sun-stroke, he quit the railroad and ran a flour mill. He remained in this business until after 1870.

He served as secretary of commissioners and superintendent of construction on the water works; a member of the board of education; and was a member of the city library board.

Married Sarah Dwight of Amherst, MA on July 15, 1846 in Morgan county, IL.
They married at the home of her sister, Mrs. J. O. King in Jacksonville.
His wife preceded him in death; as did two sons: Loefwyn, died at the age of 10 years, and Elihu, who died in infancy.

Survived by two daughters: Mrs. Edith Davis of Lynchburg, VA ; and Mrs. May Clapp of Berkley, CA.; two sisters: Mrs. Julia W. Carter of Jacksonville, and Miss Ella Wolcott of Elmira, NY; and one brother: Richmond Wolcott of Springfield.

His deceased brothers and sisters were: Rev. Samuel Wolcott, Arthur Wolcott, Mrs. William Kirby, Mrs. Elizabeth Perry, Mrs. Lewis (wife of Barbour Lewis), Helen Wolcott, and Sarah Wolcott.
