Ricard was the son of Clifford L. Bunnis and Murriel F. Bunnis of South International Falls Minnesota and he enlisted in the US Marine Corps on February 15 1966 in Minneapolis. In Vietnam he was assigned to and served with Company F, 2d Battalion, 4th Marines, 3d MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

In July, the Battalion was committed to Operation CHOCTAW, and on July 10 the Battalion began participating in Operation FREMONT in Thua Thien Province.

During a patrol on July 14, near Hill 51, 4 kilometers south of the Junction of Highway 1 and Route 601 LCpl Bunnis stepped on a buried 81mm mortar round rigged as a mine causing and explosion. The blast from the hostile explosive device killed the Marine by multiple fragmentation wounds.
