NOTE: Charleston County Chief Deputy Mitch Lucas said that 45 year old Deputy Joseph J. Matuskovic died in a shooting September 8, 2014 at an Gardens of Ashley River apartment complex. Deputy Lucas had been with the department since 2011. Also shot in the leg was 43 year old Deputy Michael Ackerman. Charleston County Sheriffs Deputies had responded to a report of a disturbance at the apartment complex.
According to CCSO investigators, the incident started at 7:36 PM when two off-duty deputies working as security officers, with three on-duty deputies assisting, responded to a report of a disorderly subject creating a disturbance at the Gardens of Ashley River apartment complex.

The person was reportedly banging on doors and vehicles in the parking lot. They knocked on Michael Oswald's door and identified themselves as deputies. The subject fired multiple gunshots through the door striking two of the on duty deputies. One of the deputies then returned fire. Oswald was found dead in the apartment by a robot that was sent in to survey the apartment after the shooting.

They did not know if the suspect had been hit by the deputy's return fire, had turned his own gun on himself or if the apartment was occupied by any additional subjects.
