David J Neely, 88, of Bridgeport, passed away September 8, 2014 at Skyview Nursing Home of Bridgeport. His funeral service will be held Sept 11, 2014 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Bridgeport. Interment will follow at Oregon Trail Memorial Cemetery in Bridgeport. David was born in Madison, NE on July 18, 1926 to David L. and Catherine (Reineccius) Neely. David attended and graduated from Madison High School. Upon graduating, he attended Norfolk Junior College and later Hastings College. He served his country in WWII in the Army Air Force where he was trained as an aerial gunner. He was stationed in Germany and France and was honorably discharged in August of 1946. David married his wife of 64 years, Donna M. Maurer at Trinity Lutheran Church in Madison on November 11, 1949. David moved to Bridgeport where he worked for the State of Nebraska Water Resources Department for 41 years. He was awarded Admiral of Nebraska Navy, by then governor Kay Orr. David served his community in various ways; church officer, city council, school board, golf board, youth baseball coach, fire department,and refereeing.
David was an active member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church where he served in various capacities including; elder, president, and Sunday school teacher. Upon retiring, he enjoyed golfing, traveling, working outdoors, and being his grandchildren’s biggest fan.His parents and brother Jerry preceded him in death.
