Milton Rathbun, a native of Verona Mills, who a few years ago won considerable notoriety by fasting for forty days, died Sunday at Riverhead, Long Island. He was a wealthy hay and grain merchant with offices in New York and was very active in business. He grew to large proportions and became very heavy, and his first fasts were experiments. By abstaining from food, he learned that he felt much better, so he repeatedly lengthened the periods of going without nourishment.
Mr. Rathbun was born in Verona Mills 46 years ago. He went to Mount Vernon to live when a young man and had since resides there, His immense business in New York was built up by his own efforts.
Surviving are his widow and two sons, Charles and Frank. Milton Rathbun's grandfather, Acors Rathbun, was the pioneer settler in the vicinity of Verona. In 1798 at the age of 21, and with a bride of 16, he came from Rhode Island and purchased 580 acres of the wild woodland, which is now a valuable farm, still in the possession of the family.
Milton Rathbun is also survived by one brother, Frank Rathbun of New York, two sister, Mrs., Alice Lombard and Mrs. Emily Kipp of New York, and one sister-in-law, Mrs. Maria Rathbun, of Utica. He was a cousin of Charles Rathbun of Rome.
