My grandmother was such a multi-dimensional person. She was gifted with talents, and was a practitioner of many lost arts: crocheting, lace-making, quilting, canning, freezing, baking, gardening, and even letter-writing. She was also very intelligent, having graduated college in 1927. She became licensed to teach in three states, and did indeed teach in one-room schoolhouses. Dedicated to being the consummate wife and mother, she devoted herself to those responsibilities. However, when my father was in high school, she went back to school--nursing school--and became an LPN at Methodist Hospital. She retired from Methodist in 1965. She was active in her church (University United Methodist), and was known for her beautiful soprano voice. Both her transcendant voice and her resilient spirit are sorely missed.
