Services were held at the Christian church for Mrs. Sallie Jowell Metcalf, 84, native Texas and oldest pioneer of Palo Pinto County, who died at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Andrew Reed.

She moved with her parents to Palo Pinto in 1855. Sallie Jowell was an advanced and brilliant student under John Hamilton Baker, the first teacher at Palo Pinto. She was often called upon to assist him in teaching the younger students.

Sallie Jowell married Capt. William Metcalf on 5 April 1868.

Survived by three children - Mrs. Andrew Reed, Mrs. Dan Cobb and George Metcalf; one sister - Mrs. D.C. Brooks; 13 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren

Mrs. William Metcalf was the daughter of J. A. Jowell, an early resident of this county and although the old Jowell homestead is no longer standing, the William Metcalf home is standing and is located 8 miles north of Palo Pinto.
