Robert (Bob) Joseph Letford was born July 27, 1920 in Bemiji, Minnesota to Kasota P. and Eva M. Letford. Bob passed away August 30, 2014 at the age of 94 in El Sobrante, CA. He is survived by the love of his life and long time partner, his wife Marie, his son Gary (Wilma) Letford, daughters Roberta (Bruno) Zanelli, Donna (David) Salvador, Stepson Phillip (Irene) Harrison, Daughter-in-law Judy (Charles) Dadisman and Brother William (Pat) Letford along with five generations of grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. K.P. Letford, his first wife Floradele Gauthier Letford, two sisters Vivian Layfield and Bertha Ryan, Stepsons Clifford (Skip) Harrison and Kenneth Harrison. As a Sergeant he served six years in the US Army, with Battery "B", 257th AAA AW Batallion. In 1944 he settled in Richmond, CAlifornia and worked as an electrician at the Standard Oil Refinery. He then moved his family to El Sobrante, CA in 1948 where he was active in the Veterans of El Sobrante and played catcher on their baseball team. He loved baseball and old western movies. But he will be best remembered as "Bob the bicycle man". In 1957 with $500 he started the El Sobrante Schwinn Bicycle Shop which was originally located on the San pablo Dam Road next to Dean Brothers Garage. Later the shop would be relocated to its current location on El Portal Drive. Bob was very proud of the community and generations of patrons he and his staff served for over 30 years until his retirement. His son Gary has continued his father's legacy as "the second generation bicycle man" as owner and operator. In retirement, Bob and Marie took the opportunity to travel the United States and Canada by travel trailer enjoying every nook and cranny of the country. In their early 80's they even became professional clowns performing with their clownmates at children hospitals and special events. Throughout his life Bob was involved with the American Legion SIRs, Senior Citizens of Pinole, Lions Club and his affiliation as a member of the El Sobrante Church of Christ for many years. Visitation: Sun 9/7 2-4 PM @ Chapel of the Mission Bells in San Pablo. Funeral Services will be held at the El Sobrante Church of Christ, 3450 El Portal Drive, El Sobrante, CA on Mon. 9/8 ! 11:00 AM, Reception to follow.
