John E. Franklin and his daughter Isabelle (1848-1927) moved from Alabama to Texas after his first wife Christian McLeod (born in 1827 in Clarke County Alabama) and daughter, Larra born in 1850, both died in 1850. John and Isabelle settled in Henderson County, Texas living next door to John and Lucinda Spikes, and their daughter, Margaret. John eventually married Margaret Spikes and had four children, John Thomas (Uncle Tom) Franklin (1853 - 1935), and Felix S. Franklin (1855 - 1927). John Franklin died from erysipelas in his nose and is buried on the west side of Cedar Creek in Kaufman County on the road from Kaufman to Prairieville, Texas.

After the death of John E. Franklin, Margaret "Mattie" Spikes Franklin married Judge Andrew Jackson Hunter of Weatherford, Texas, who is buried in the Dean Cemetery near Weatherford, Texas. Mattie is buried in Oakland Cemetery, Weatherford, Texas.
