Sylvia was born March 10, 1910, to Mr. and Mrs. Wade and Edna (Wall) Pemberton west of Iberia. She was married to Spurgeon Atwill in Vienna, Mo., on June 3, 1942. Her husband survives her. Also surviving is an only son, Daniel K. Atwill, of Kansas City, Mo.

Sylvia was a classmate of this editor and graduated from Iberia Academy in May 1930. She then went on to the Iberia Junior College and received a degree from that institution. She then furthered her education in attending Berea College, Berea, Kentucky. When she finished her work there, she returned to the faculty of Iberia Jr. College and the Academy where she had many interested students in the art of hand weaving and home industries. She studied at Iowa State University at Ames and also became a graduate of Lincoln University in Jefferson City.

In her later teaching career she taught 18 years at the Iberia Public Schools as an elementary instructor. She retired from active teaching in 1970. At that time she was honored by fellow teachers and the school administration.

Sylvia leaves behind an outstanding group of brother and sister families. There are six Pemberton brothers: Emil, Harold and James of Iberia; Victor of Kansas City, Kans.; Don of Cape Girardeau and Lynn of Coal City, Ill.

Her six sisters are: Mrs. Wilma Birge of Seymour, Indiana, Mrs. Gretchen Jones of Soddy, Tenn. and Okeechobee, Florida; Mrs Pauline Livingston of Sequim, Washington; Mrs. Maxine Deardeuff of Oak Harbor, Washington; Mrs Janet Wilson of Florissant, Mo. and Mrs. Jean Keeth of Iberia. Two granddaughters survive, children of her son, Danny Atwill.

Funeral services for Sylvia were held in the Stevinson Funeral Home Chapel Saturday morning, February 16, at 11:00 with the Rev. Gary Gulley, minister of the local Church of the Nazarene, and Rev. Mark Richards of Jefferson City officiating. Pallbearers were her six brothers. She was laid to rest in the beautiful Iberia Cemetery.
