Marion Sentinel July 22, 1943
Capt. Howard Merkel Reported as Missing in Southwest Pacific
Capt. Howard W. Merkel, of Marion, is listed by the war department as missing in action as of July 10, somewhere in the southwest Pacific war area.
Mr. and Mrs. Charles A. Merkel, parents of Captain Merkel, received the notice from the adjutant general's office Sunday.
Captain Merkel was graduated from Marion high school in 1933. He was on the athletic teams, and later took a roving college course at Coe, Cornell, Iowa State and received his degree at Tulsa. Before the war he wanted to become a transport pilot, and took a flying course at Lincoln, Nebraska. When war was declared with Germany, Merkel joined the army air corps, received his wings at Mongtomery, Ala., and then saw service at the Canal Zone, at Trinidad, and took a gunner's course in Porto Rico, and then was sent back to the United States and helped as an instructor at El Paso, Denver, and Topeka.
Captain Merkel was last home in the later part of March, and it was his new bomber which a week or so later excited Marion people with sever low sweeps over this city. It was while he was taking his new ship to Minneapolis for the installation of final equipment that he made his salute to Marion. Immediately after the ship was completely equipped, Captain Merkel and his crew took the bomber to the battle area where he since has been operating.
Captain Merkel's last letter from Australia was dated June 14, and reached San Francisco July 4. He was the pilot of a big B-24 bomber.
Before leaving for active duty, Captain Merkel warned his people they were liable to hear wrong reports which could not be refuted for weeks, and perhaps months after the happenings, and they are bravely awaiting further news of their missing son.
An elder son of the Merkels, Major George C. Merkel, is also in army service, with headquarters at Fort Sill, Okla.
