Composer. Lyracist. Born Alexander Galbraith "Sandy" Wilson in Sale, Greater Manchester, he was educated at Elstree preparatory school, in Berkshire, Harrow and later attended Oriel College, Oxford, where he earned a degree in English literature. During his college years, he contributed to the West End Revues and in 1953 wrote the hugely successful "The Boyfriend", a throwback to the musicals of the Roaring Twenties. The play ran for five years at Wyndham's theatre in London. It would go on to New York where it ran for 485 performances and starred Julie Andrews in her Broadway debut. "The Boy Friend" was later filmed in 1971 and starred Twiggy. Wilson's other musicals included Valmouth (1958), Divorce Me, Darling! (1964) and "His Monkey Wife" (1971). He published his memoir "I Could Be Happy" in 1975.
