Thomas Smith in 1942 that asserts Elizabeth Pearl Chamberlain was born in 1884, I believe that to be incorrect. The 1880 Census indicates a Leizie [I assume this is short for Elizabeth] as a daughter of Perley and Margriet [Margaret] [Young] Chamberlan [Chamberlain] who is 4 years old. The 1900 Census indicates an Elizabeth P. as a daughter of Perley and Margaret Chamberlain who is 23 years old. There is no mention of a 15 or 16 year old daughter named either Elizabeth or Pearl in this family in the 1900 Census. Also a birth year of 1884 would mean that her mother was 52-1/2 years old at the time of Pearl's birth – not impossible but highly unlikely. The letter from 1942 was written as a requirement during the Second World War era to prove people's nationality, birthplace and date. It is not as authoritative as a copy of a birth certificate and, given Mr. Smith's age and the length of time that has passed from the date to which he is referring, I find it less convincing than the Census records. The 1880 Census Identifies a Thomas J. Smith, born about 1873, in Rocky Hill, KY, a town reasonably close to Park City [Glasgow Junction] where Leizie is shown living; however, there is no Smith family within two Census pages of the Chamberlan [Chamberlain] family. There is no record in the 1900 Census of a J. Thomas or Thomas J. Smith in Barren County, Kentucky. That is not to say that they could have been neighbors in 1890 since that Census was lost in a fire. Pearl, I believe, was always reluctant to admit how much older than J. Scott Greer she really was and took the opportunity of the war requirements to document a false birth year. Presumably she met J. Scott Greer because she taught him in school. While it is possibly that she would have been six years older than he, fourteen years is more likely. For these reasons, I believe Elizabeth Pearl Chamberlain was born in 1876.
