Carlton Ernest Young, 46, died Feb. 2, 1998, at his Anchorage home. Memorial services were held at East Anchorage United Methodist Church with the Rev. John Henry officiating. Burial followed at Fort Richardson National Cemetery.

Mr. Young was born to Margaret Young and the late Robert Young on May 2, 1951, in Waynesburg, Pa., while his father was assigned to Shemya Air Base. He initially came to Alaska in 1953 with his parents and lived in Anchorage for four years before moving to Moses Lake, Wash. Mr. Young returned to Alaska in 1967 and graduated from East Anchorage High School in 1969. After graduating from West Point in 1973 and service in the Air Force, he moved to Anchorage for the third time in 1982. His marriage to Janet Fedorczyk ended in divorce. Throughout his life, Mr. Young was interested in nature and the environment. He was a member of numerous organizations that advocated preservation of the wilderness. His primary interest in life was reflecting the American pioneer spirit in his artistic and literary works. He was a member of the National Rifle Association and, until recent years, was an avid hunter and outdoorsman. Mr. Young's daughter, Michelle, died shortly after birth.

He is survived by his mother, Margaret Young; sister, Amy Young and brother-in-law, Ben Simmons; nieces, Leah and Karnie Simmons; niece, Jamie Walker, her husband, Bob, and their son, Austin, all of Anchorage; brother, John Young; and nephew, Andrew Young, of Vienna, Va. The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Greene County Historical Society, which is restoring the foundry and machine shop established by Carl's great-grandfather, c/o Margaret K. Young, 7724 Hennings Way, Anchorage 99504. Arrangements were by Witzleben Family Funeral Homes & Crematory, Bragaw Chapel.
