John I. Dunham, Sr., 85, of Fayetteville, passed away at his home on Monday, September 1, following a brief illness.
John was born July 27, 1929 in White Oak, NC, to William Mangum Dunham, Sr., and Clyde Wilson Robinson Dunham. A graduate of White Oak High School, he enjoyed a long, successful career with the US Air Force, serving initially as an enlisted airman and later for more than 30 years as Civilian Military Aircraft Engine Maintenance Specialist at postings in North Carolina and Louisiana. Upon retirement from his career with the Air Force, he worked for General Electric as an engine representative, serving at locations in England, Pennsylvania, and South Carolina, before eventually retiring with his wife, Patsy, to Fayetteville.
John was a remarkably energetic and hard-working man so his passing on Labor Day had particular significance for his family and friends. He was active in his community, as a member of the Eastover Civic Club and a volunteer marshal at the Baywood Golf Club. He belonged to Salem United Methodist Church, where he enjoyed serving iced tea at Wednesday evening church suppers and helping prepare the sanctuary each week for Sunday services. John was known for his kindness and friendly demeanor. He loved his family, and took great happiness in the unique personalities and achievements of his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Patsy Howell Dunham; son, John I. Dunham, Jr. of California City, CA, and his wife Vicki Dunham; son Mark Dunham of Washington, DC, and his partner, Rev. Dr. Kenneth Kovacs; daughter, Jeanne Dunham Karst of Clayton, NC, and her husband, Matt Karst; sister, Virginia Dunham, of Charlotte; and grandchildren, Devon Karst of Raleigh, Mattilyn Karst of Chapel Hill, Chason Karst of Clayton, and Alexandra Dunham, John Dunham, Holtman Dunham, and Skylar Dunham, of California City, CA.
A service of witness to the resurrection will be held Thursday, September 4, at 1:00 pm at Salem United Methodist Church, 2165 Middle Road, in Eastover. The interment will follow at Bethlehem United Methodist Cemetery, White Oak, NC. Visitation will take place the previous evening, Wednesday, September 3, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at Butler Funeral Home, 6535 Clinton Road, in Stedman.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial gifts be directed to Salem United Methodist Church, 2165 Middle Road, Eastover, NC, 28312, and/or Bethlehem United Methodist Church, 72 Bethlehem Methodist Church Road, White Oak, NC 28399.
