Mary Ann Amber Fisher, a daughter of George and Ann [née Amber] Fisher, was born in the bounds of Richmond, Virginia. Mary Ann's maternal uncle was Chief Justice John Marshall of the U.S. Supreme Court; whom she would name her 2nd son after.

On March 19th 1835, Mary Ann Fisher married Nicholas Cabell Kinney, a widower with four sons. Mr. Kinney was a prominent lawyer and public servant in Staunton, Virginia. They would also have four sons:
Alexander Fisher (1836 – 1904)
John Marshall (1838 – 1904)
Thomas Colston (1841 – 1863)
Edward Carrington (1845 – 1919)
