Obituary on file at Indiana Co. (PA) Historical & Genealogical Society

Capt. John H. Devers.

Capt. John H. Devers, aged 87 years, one of the prominent residents of Blairsville, died in that place on Sunday. He was born near Ligonier, Westmoreland county, February 7, 1833. His father, Hugh Devers, located in this county when the deceased was a youth. John H. Devers spent his early life in Homer City, where he assisted his father in the mercantile business. He later went to Saltsburg and eventually bought the store of his employer in that place. Disposing of his business there he became the representative for a Philadelphia mercantile firm and continued that work for a quarter of a century. He served as a private in Co. C, 19th Cavalry, during the Civil war and later as captain of a company of Emergency Militia. He was a member of the Methodist church. He was united in marriage to Miss Elizabeth Ogden in July, 1862. A peculiar co-incident in connection with the death of Capt. Devers is the fact that his sister-in-law, Mrs. George Ogden, of Homer City, died in Radnor, on the same day that Capt. Devers passed away. Following the death of his wife several years ago, he retired from active business and spent much of his time in travel. Funeral services were held at his late home Wednesday afternoon and burial made in the Blairsville cemetery.
