Lloyd L. Bates, age 96, of the Oakview Nursing Home in Conrad and formerly of Union, died September 3, 2014.
Lloyd was born on a farm in rural Boone County, Iowa on May 11, 1918 to Eland Bates and Myrtle (Gardner) Bates. He attended the Napier Consolidated School and graduated in 1935. On January 8, 1941 he entered the United States Army as a private. He attended Officers Candidate School and was assigned to the 19th Tank Battalion of the 9th armored division. He and Jo (Rosajune Robinson) Bates were married on January 31, 1944 and he was promoted to captain and shipped overseas. He participated in the Battle of the Ardennes in Luxembourg, and the Battle of the Rhineland where his unit captured the Remagan Bridge over the Rhine River which was a turning point in the war. He was awarded the Bronze Star medal for recovering wounded soldiers under enemy fire.
When he returned from Europe, on December 24, 1945, he went back to Iowa State College and finished his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Degree in 1950. Later that year, he and Jo moved to Union, Iowa where Lloyd established his practice. When his practice became larger than he could manage, Dr. Robert Carithers became his first partner and later Dr. Ralph Strother was his partner.
Dr. Bates was active in the community of Union. He served on the School Board when the Union and Whitten School were consolidated. He was a Boy Scout leader, was on the Fire Department, and was the Mayor of Union. He was chairman of the Building Committee for the Union Community Church addition. He was instrumental in establishing the South Hardin Recreation Area and Swimming Pool where he served as Chairman of the Board for many years. His generosity touched many lives.
His was predeceased by his wife of 69 years, Jo Bates in 2013, his son, David Bates, his parents, his three brothers, his sister, Roine Strother and sister, Dorothy Gillett.
He is survived by his daughters, Judith (Craig) Fulton of Ames, Iowa and Beth (Stephen) Gaul of Slater, Iowa and his grandchildren, Jane Fulton of Olds, Canada, John Fulton of Ames, Iowa, Scott Gaul of Slater, Iowa and Rachel Gaul of Slater, Iowa. Dr. Bates is survived by his sisters Evelyn Longseth of Longmont, Colorado, Ruth Wherry of Carson City, Nevada, and Mary Elaine (Eddie)Pecoraro of Spring Valley, California.
