Maria Johnson was born in Oslunda, Sweden on February 12, 1883. She came to her uncle's home, Ole Swenson in Bottineau, North Dakota, where she worked hard helping care for her nieces and nephews, even knitting stockings for them by lamplight in the evenings, She moved to Minneapolis after a couple of years where working conditions were much better. She earned $1.50 a week for housework! In Minnesota, she met Axel Nelson and married him on April 27, 1906. Maria and Axel lived in Minneapolis for ten years where Axel worked for the park board and lit street lamps in the early evenings for a second job. In 1914, Maria and Axel adopted a daughter, Lucille. In 1917, the family moved to North Dakota with a team of big, black horses. They rented a farm in McLean County called the Dick Kitts farm. In 1919, their son Neal was born. In 1927, they moved to a farm about a mile and a half away and built a house there. Some how they survived the drought and depression of the 1930's, living on the farm with egg money for groceries and cream money for bills. Most of their clothing was made or bought from the Sears or Montgomery Wards catalogs. Maria and Axel lived on the family farm from 1917 to 1957 in North Dakota. Then due to Axel's health, they moved to California to be near their children. Axel and Maria lived in the Ventura, California area until their deaths.
