Sharon Sanford, 72, of New Ulm died Saturday, August 30, 2014 at the Divine Providence Community Home in Sleepy Eye. Funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, September 4, 2014 at Oakwood United Methodist Church in New Ulm with Pastor Ric Jacobsen officiating. Burial will be in the Mountain Lake City Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 - 7 p.m. Wednesday and from 7:30 – 8:30 a.m. Thursday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home, South Chapel, in New Ulm and will continue for one hour prior to the time of service at the church on Thursday.
Sharon is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Wendy and Todd Turgeon of Minnetonka; sons and daughter-in-law, Brad "Sarge" Kirk of New Ulm, Tim and Sheila Kirk of Mountain Lake; grandchildren, Lucas and Gabby Kirk, Jordan, Carter and Anna Kirk, Tori Turgeon; sisters and brothers-in-law, Marlene and LeRoy Moon of Grantsburg, Wisconsin, Deb and Wade Smith of Pipestone, Ray Kirk of Balaton; sisters-in-law, Janice Swanson of Pipestone, Margaret Kirk of Garvin, LaDonna Biese of Moore, Oklahoma. She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Claire Kirk, Jim Sanford; son, Randy Kirk; and brothers, Darvin and Dale Swanson.
Sharon Kay Swanson was born on October 9, 1941 in Tracy to Palmer and Hazel (Hanson) Swanson. She graduated from Balaton High School. On April 11, 1959 she married Claire Kirk. After his death she married Jim Sanford on September 18, 1987. Sharon had worked at Toro in Windom, Casey’s General Store, United Prairie Bank in New Ulm, and the New Ulm Area Emergency Food Shelf. She enjoyed camping, gardening, and spending time with her family. Sharon was a member of Oakwood United Methodist Church in New Ulm. In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to the New Ulm Food Shelf or donor’s choice.
