Alice Devereaux Dies

Mrs. Alice Sibson Devereaux, daughter of a pioneer Portland family, died Wednesday at a local nursing home after several years of illness. She was 81.

She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Samuel Sibson and was the widow of E. L. Devereaux, who headed the Devereaux Mortgage Co., now Commonwealth, Inc.

Born across the street from St. Stephen's Cathedral, Oct. 30, 1879, Mrs. Devereaux, an early graduate of St. Helens Hall, spent her entire life as a resident of Portland.

She was a member of the Colonial Dames, charter member of the Town Club, life member of the Portland Art Museum, and belonged to the Arts and Crafts Society and the University Club. A philanthropist and benefactress, she was a strong supporter of the Portland Symphony and numerous other institutions and charities.

Mrs. Devereaux was an ardent golfer and won many early time championships at the Waverly Country Club.

Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. David W. Eccles and Mrs. Chauncey Catto, both of Portland, and Mrs. Henry McCall Jr. of Gearhart; a son, Lincoln of Berkley, Calif.; 11 grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Service will be Friday at 10 a.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church. Cremation will be at Portland Crematorium & Mausoleum. J. P. Finley & Son is in charge of arrangements.
