Elderly Man on Bike Killed Here

An elderly rural Patterson man died early Monday afternoon after the bicycle he was riding was struck by a truck at the intersection of Highway 33 and E Street.

Walter D. Winegar, 86, was pronounced dead at 1:39 p.m. at Doctors Medical Center in Modesto where he was rushed by Patterson Ambulance.

The elderly man, who had used his bicycle for transportation for many years, was east bound toward the Yancey Lumber Co. Yard when he crossed the highway. He was over halfway across when hit by a Jalisco taco truck that was being driven northbound by Jose Manuel Olivera, 23, of Modesto.

Olivera was cited for being an unlicensed driver, having no registration in the vehicle, and no insurance information in the vehicle.

Winegar reportedly suffered head injuries and trauma. His bike was in the inner lane of the roadway when struck. Investigating Patterson police office Scott Phipps said the accident is still under investigation.
