SUNBURG - Gladys M. Stai, age 89, of Sunburg, died Wednesday morning, Oct. 24, at the Bethesda Heritage Center in Willmar.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 29, at the Sunburg Free Lutheran Church. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. on Sunday, Oct 28, at the Peterson Brothers Sunburg Funeral Home and also one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday. www.petersonbrothers.com
Gladys Marion Stai was born on May 24, 1923, on the family farm in Camp Lake Township, Swift County, Minnesota, the daughter of Bernt and Ruby (Hanson) Thompson. She grew up in the rural Sunburg community, was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and received her education in the country schools. On November 25, 1939, Gladys was married to Jerome Gunderson at the Rolling Forks parsonage by Rev. Beito and they made their home on a farm North of Sunburg. Jerome died in 1968. On June 28, 1981, Gladys was married to Arnold Stai at the Sunburg Free Lutheran Church and they made their home on a farm South of Sunburg. Arnold died in 2003. Gladys worked hard as a homemaker, baking several loaves of bread daily for her family. She was a longtime member of the Sunburg Free Lutheran Church and was president of the Ladies Aide for many years. Her hobbies included woodworking, baking, carpentry, painting, sewing, quilting and crocheting. She was also a self-taught musician.
She is survived by her six children, Marlys (and Ronald) Torkelson of Kerkhoven, David Gunderson of Brooten, Janice (and Leland) Hanson of Sunburg, Doreen (and Brian) Syverson of Sedan, Judy (and Jim) Ellingson of Sunburg and Margery (and Rodney) Gronseth of Sunburg; eleven grandchildren, Alan (and Julie) Torkelson, Susan (and Jim) Adams, Ellie Torkelson, Kenny Torkelson, Cherry (and Ryan) Olson, Larry Syverson, Julie Syverson, Amanda (and Mike) Ulland, Kraig Ellingson, Megan (and Aaron) Sondrol and Dylan Torkelson; twenty-one great grandchildren, Hillary, Jamie, Zack, Sam, Jonathan, Graham, Benjamin, Hayden, Heather, Holly, Kendal, Tasha, Taran, Brent, Sarah, Karl, Anneka, Greta, Erik, Ivar and Mason; and two great great grandchildren, Alice and Ella. Also surviving are two brothers, Donald (and Lorraine) Thompson of Kerkhoven and Thomas Thompson of Willmar and two sisters, Bernice Rodi of Benson and Betty Nordby of Spicer, besides other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, both husbands, Jerome Gunderson and Arnold Stai; four sons, Jerome Jr., Wesley, Robert and Joel; one brother, Bernard Thompson and four sisters, Helen Ellen Mabel and Clara.
