Philip J. Anstett was born in New Germany(now Maryhill), Ontario Canada, the 11th child of Francis Antoine and Therese (Roethel) Anstett . According to Baptismal records of St. Boniface Church, Maryhill.

In 1854 his family moved to Formosa, Culross Township, Bruce County, Ontario when land opened for homesteading.Philip was four years old.

In 1872 at the age of 22, he married Catherine Dresch , the daughter of Valentine and Ann(Zimmerman) Dresch. Catherine was born October 5, 1855 in Hanover, Ontario. The marriage was witnessed by Henry Kroetch and Philip's younger brother, Felix.

Philip worked in Teeswater and other small towns in the Formosa area.He owned a Bakery in Formosa. He was a boiler operator and tended furnaces in a saw mill.

Later He and Catherine moved to Detroit where he worked for a time as a watchman. He went to Boyne City , Michigan and then back to Windsor where he worked for the railroad in the watch tower. Many members of his family were musical, and when they got together there was much singing with accompaniment on the piano and violin.

Philip and Catherine had eight children.
