In 1619 Lady Anne Clifford wrote in her diary of the miseries of my Lady Lake in her unfortunate marriage. On Apr. 24, 1619 she gave birth to a son, but died shortly thereafter 'having been grievously tormented a long time with pains & sores. Since the death of Sir Arthur Lake's Lady there is a daughter of hers come to light (thought to be by Dick Martin, or rather some greater man's) that by the helpe of goode frends layes claim to Sir George Caries land because she was borne in wedlocke'. Richard Martin was a friend of John Donne and alleged to be her lover for a time. A verse letter dated Feb. 7, 1612 by John Donne and addressed to her survived in the Duke of Manchester's papers.

Gravesite Details

Initially placed in the vault at St Martin in the Fields, May 2, 1619, her remains were reinterred at Felsted, May 5, 1619.
