Funeral services for Darrell “Doug “Thompson will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 6th, at the Stephenville Funeral Home Chapel. Graveside service will follow at the Garden of Memories. The family will visit with all friends of Doug Thompson at the funeral home on Friday September 5th from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Doug was born in Walnut Springs, Texas to Henry D. and Lillian Cox Thompson. He along with his two older brothers attended Tolar High School in Tolar, Texas. In 1952 at the age of 17 with permission of his mother, Doug enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He was stationed at Camp Pendleton, Ca. with the first Marine Division. In 1953 Doug was shipped off to Korea. In Korea he would fight for and defend democracy for a people who could not defend themselves. During his service to his country he was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal with two combat stars and a Purple Heart for shrapnel injuries he sustained during a two day long fire fight. He also received the United Nations Ribbon and the Korean Presidential Unit Citation. Doug finished his military career as a very proud Marine with the Rank of Corporal and was recommended for re-enlistment. After his honorable discharge in 1955 Doug started working as a pipeline welder. His career in the pipeline industry would take him all over the world. He traveled to England, Scotland, Australia and the Middle East, Africa, South America and Alaska. Doug made it a rule to take his family whenever possible. It was hard to find place on the globe that Doug and his family had not been. While working in Minnesota he met Priscilla Evangeline Palmer. The two were married in Lusk, Wyoming on October 29th 1962. Doug and his family would eventually settle down in Stephenville, Texas to be close to rest of the Thompson family. In October of 2012 Doug and Pat celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in Las Vegas, Nevada. All the kids and grandkids were able to make it, it was truly a glorious celebration.

Doug was a 32nd degree endowed member of the Scottish Rite of Free Masonry from the Bluff Dale Lodge. Through this service he focused on helping children stricken by childhood diseases. He was a member of Pipeliner’s Union 798. He loved Texas football! From the Stephenville Yellow Jackets, to the Texas Longhorns and the Dallas Cowboys (before they fired Tom Landry). Doug was well-known for raising prize winning Boer Goats. Doug also had an incredible green thumb, every summer you could count on some of the most delicious vegetables and the hottest peppers in Erath County. Doug was true Texas cowboy. He loved Texas and had no problem telling anyone in the world what a great state he lived in. We the family, have often said “he was born about a hundred years too late”. He loved his family so very much. We have lost a husband, father, uncle, friend and great man, but God has gained a beautiful blue eyed Texas angel!

Doug is survived by his wife Priscilla Thompson of almost 52 years and his daughters and grandchildren; Pamela Sheahan and her husband Mark Sheahan and their children Brittany and Daniel Sheahan from Marysville, California. Leah Scoggins and her husband Billy Scoggins from Dallas, Texas.

Besides his parents, Doug was also preceded in death by his brothers, H. D. Thompson and O’Farrell “Pal” Thompson. Also preceded in death by his stepfather Steve Stevens from Hamilton, Texas, who apparently raised him very well.

Memorials can be made to the Wounded Warrior Foundation or your local animal shelter. These organizations were very dear to Doug's heart.
