SIOUX CITY --- Dr. Kenneth M. Keane, 93, of Sioux City passed away Sunday, Aug. 31, 2014, at Holy Spirit Retirement Home.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 30th and Jackson streets in Sioux City, with the Revs. Daniel J. Rupp and Lawrence McCarty officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation with family present will be 5 to 8 p.m. today, with a vigil service at 7 p.m., at the church. Arrangements are with Meyer Brother Colonial Chapel. Kenneth was born May 25, 1921, in Kansas City, Mo., the son of Martin and Hildegarde (Meisman) Keane. He came to Sioux City as a young boy, attending Immaculate Conception Church and School for a short time, then St. Joseph Church and grade school. In addition to his studies, he earned his Eagle Scout. He graduated from Trinity High School in 1939. He attended Trinity College, Morningside College, and Creighton University in Omaha, Neb.

On Dec. 27, 1943, he married Dorothy Jean Meyer of Sioux City, at St. Boniface Catholic Church.

He was in the U.S. Army during World War II under the Army Specialized Training Program (A.S.T.P) while attending medical school at Creighton University. He graduated March 17, 1946, and interned at St. Joseph Hospital, Sioux City. He spent two years in the U.S. Army at Fort Knox, Ky., and was a captain at the time of discharge, having served in the Medical Corps. He was in general practice in Elk Point, S.D., for two years, leaving to take specialty training in orthopedic surgery for three years in Louisville, Ky., at Kosair Crippled Children's Hospital and U.S. Veterans Hospital.

He and his family returned to Sioux City in August 1954, with Kenneth having a private practice for 13 years. He was a partner of Northwest Iowa Orthopedics, P.C. from 1967 until 1988, when he retired due to health reasons.

Dr. Keane was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church.

He had been past president for one year of the Iowa Orthopedic Society, fellow of the American College of Surgeons, member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, staff member of St. Joseph Hospital and later Marian Health Center, courtesy staff member of St. Luke's Medical Center, member of the Woodbury County Medical Society, member of Mid-Central States Orthopedic Society, and member of the Iowa State Medical Society.

He was a former member of the Sioux City Country Club, a former member of Rotary Club and a former board member of Holy Spirit Retirement Home. Kenneth and Dorothy received the Briar Cliff University Medal in 1980 and Briar Cliff University Family Award in 2009.

His first loves were his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was an avid reader and photographer. He enjoyed golf, bridge and traveling.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy of Sioux City; 12 children, Jim (Mary) Keane of Phoenix, Ariz., Bob (Linn) Keane of Dakota Dunes, S.D., Tom (Sandy) Keane of Sioux City, Mary Jean (John) Mugan of Henderson, Nev., Mike (Kathy) Keane of Sioux City, Ed (Jane) Keane of Sioux City, Kathy (John) Kallin of Ida Grove, Iowa, Dan (Roxie) Keane of Sioux City, David Keane of Sioux City, Therese (Lyle) Risinger of Sioux City, John (Ruth) Keane of Sioux City, and Kevin Keane of Sioux City; 44 grandchildren; 45 great-grandchildren; a brother, Stephen (Rochelle) Keane of Springdale, Ark.; two sisters-in-law, Mary Meacham of Burnsville, Minn., and Julie Meyer of Fresno, Calif.; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers-in-law, Robert Meyer and William Meacham; and grandson-in-law, Alvin Danguilan.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Bishop Heelan Catholic Schools, Briar Cliff University or Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church.
