Major League Baseball Player. When Samuel Goldwyn began looking for someone to play Lou Gehrig in "Pride of the Yankees," he quizzed baseball writers and got input from several sources. The Sporting News polled the fans, and their pick was Humphries because of the strong facial resemblance. Goodwyn considered the candidates and chose actor Gary Cooper for the role. Humphries was a right-hander who pitched for the Cleveland Indians in 1938-40, the Chicago White Sox in 1941-45 and in one game with the Philadelphia Phillies in 1946. He led the American League in appearances in 1938 with 48. His best season was 1942, when he was 12-12 with a 2.68 earned run average and 17 complete games in 28 starts. He finished his career with a 52-63 record and 3.78 ERA.
