George Thomas Cotton, 85, of Wilmington, NC passed away peacefully on July 20, 2014 at the Lower Cape Fear Hospice Care Center.

George was born to the late Margaret Ferguson and Herbert Milton Cotton on June 5, 1929 in Hartford, CT. He spent his early years in Waban, MA and was a 1948 graduate of Rivers Country Day School in Weston, MA where he was on the wrestling and football teams. He began his collegiate education at Miami University of Oxford, OH but enlisted in the Air Force and served in the Korean War as a Radiology and Medical technician. He returned to Miami and graduated in 1956 with a BA in Business.

While there, he met Mary Lou Beal Saenz whom he married on June 13, 1956. The couple moved East to Natick, MA. He was employed by Raytheon Inc as an Engineering Technician and Associate Engineer then moved to Kingston, MA in 1965 and ran the Plymouth 5-1.00 with his brother until 1968. He then held several management positions with the Adams Drug Co and managed the Brooks store in North Plymouth for 5 years before moving to Wilmington, NC in 1977. He managed the Gas World on Market St there for many years during the 80s and early 90s from which he retired.

He was proceeded in death by his wife Mary Lou in 1993 and long time companion Elizabeth Bird in June of 2014 as well as brother Robert Cotton and sister, Janet Hale. He was a member the Wilmington Singles Club for many years where he was an active dancer. At age 75 he and several friends participated in a sky dive.

He is survived by a brother, R****** Cotton of Duxbury, MA; daughter C****** of Charleston, SC; son T***** and daughter-in-law L**** Lewis Cotton of Rocky Point, NC; grandchildren S**** Cotton Pridgen; A***** Cotton both of Wilmington; B****** Cotton of Chapel Hill; M€€€€ Cotton of Wilmington; A€€€ Cotton-US Navy; H€€€€€ Cotton of Rocky Point; and 6 great grandchildren.

A memorial service was held at Port City Community Church on Thursday, July 24th. He was laid to rest with his wife Mary Lou at the National Cemetery on Market St. In lieu of flowers, memorials should be made to the Lower Cape Fear Hospice Care Center.
