Jean Elaine Chappell Poole, 84, departed this world on Friday afternoon, May 7, 2010, in McKinney, Texas, following a nine-month illness.

She was born on Dec. 13, 1925, in Lincoln, Lancaster County, Nebraska, to the late Ralph Heaton Chappell and Clara May Ankeny. Jean was a Christian and lived the early years of her adult life in Kansas City, Missouri, and her later years in Austin, Texas, and Houston, Texas.

She is survived by her beloved children from her first marriage — Linda Cartledge and Duane Keys. She is also survived by three stepchildren from her second marriage — Beth Young, David Poole and Michael Poole. Other survivors include her half-sister Mary Jo Menelle and half-brother Doug Chappell, five grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and numerous other family members and friends. She was preceded in death by her wonderful husband George, her parents, her beloved grandmother Lavinia Hicks Ankeny Tyson, her stepmother Josephine Fern Rollings Chappell, her sister Ruth Chappell Maupin, her niece Mary Jo Connealy, and her nephew Larry Dan Maupin.

Jean lost her mother when she was 18 months old, at which time various family members stepped forward to take Jean into their homes so that her father could work to support his two daughters. Jean was delighted when her father subsequently remarried and had two additional children and when, for brief periods of time, she was able to be with her family in the Chappell home. Subsequently, as the Great Depression neared its end, a teen-aged Jean was sent to live at the Mother's Jewels Home in York, Nebraska, before finally moving to a boarding house in Omaha to continue her high school education.

These childhood circumstances shaped Jean into a remarkable woman – a forthright person who could adapt to any situation no matter how difficult, someone who was grateful and expressed appreciation for the smallest kindness, a mother fiercely protective of and loving towards her children, and someone who valued her husband George, her family and friends, and the devotion and unconditional love that her beloved dogs each gave her. Jean maintained lifelong friendships with friends from her teenage years while living at the Mother's Jewels home in York, Nebraska, and from her high school in Omaha; from her years as a young adult in Kansas City, Missouri, during World War II and from the Ruskin neighborhood of Kansas City, Missouri; from her years in Austin, Texas, and Houston, Texas; and from friendships begun at family reunions with distant family members. Jean was a stay-at-home mother for many years and later worked various jobs, retiring from Igloo Products in Houston, Texas. And always, she had one or two devoted dogs at her side.

Jean was a gifted storyteller and writer of family history as well as a passionate genealogist who loved nothing more than traveling with her husband George to family reunions and historic sites. Jean's family and friends will miss her newsy letters and lengthy telephone calls. Her family will miss her beautiful laugh, her individualistic sense of humor, her directness and her witty observations, her beautiful singing voice, her enjoyment of good company and good food, and her love of jigsaw puzzles. Her family wishes to thank the wonderful caregivers at McKinney, Texas, Healthcare & Rehabilitation Center as well as Hospice Plus for the caring and thoughtful support given to Jean and her family during her illness in McKinney, Texas.

Interment was in historic Pecan Grove Cemetery, McKinney, Texas. A private memorial service was held. For those desiring, memorials may be made to Pecan Grove Cemetery, 1701 South McDonald Street, McKinney, Texas 75069, for maintenance of this historic cemetery.
