Emily Josephine was born to Hercules Louis Dousman (Son of Michael Dousman & Catherine Jane Aiken McDonald) and Sioux Indian woman Margaret "Peggy" Pelagia Campbell (daughter of Archibald Colin John Campbell & Catherine Demontigny - Sioux Ninse Campbell.)

Her siblings were George Dousman (1836-1860) and Infant John Dousman (1838 who died at birth - as did Mother Margaret at childbirth). She grew up in the historic town of Prairie du Chien, WI. Her father was a prosperous landowner and lumberman.

Emily was wed to Charles Barrette - son of Peter Barrette & Theresa Godard LaPointe Barrette - also early settlers of Prairie du Chien. Their marriage took place in the original St. Gabriel's Catholic Church. Charles & Emily became the parents of Mae Virginia (Thomas Edward Ward), Theresa (Existe Brothers), Mary Jane (Charles D Brandes), Philomena "Minnie" (Lazarus Lon Pitt), Susan Emily (died at two years), Martha "Mattie" Josephine (Gabriel George Louis St. Germain), Mae Emily (1866-1885) and Charles Louis Barrette.

The family is interred in Calvary Cemetery, Hercules Dousman has a large plot where he and second family (plus household help from the estate known as The House on the Mound. Emily has a stately monument where she, Susan Emily & Charles Louis' names are inscribed. Daughter Theresa Barrette Brothers (1852-1877) is most likely interred in the plot.
