He was born September 8, 1916 in Windham, NY and was the son of the late Herbert and Hazel Holcomb Cole.
Herbert was self-employed as a dairy farmer until 1970 and then raised beef cattle and did custom farming and field crops until 2003. He then helped out on the Knapp Farm until his retirement in 2008. He also had been employed by the Town of Wappinger Highway Department until 1982. He was chairman and vice president of the Agriculture and Soil Conservation Service and was a member of the Dutchess County Cooperative Extension. He was a member of the Mt. Hope Grange and the Mt. Hope Dartball Team. He worked with the Boy Scouts and was a member of the Farm Bureau Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service. He was also an avid deer and coon hunter. In 2003, he started the Senior Farmer's Gala for Dutchess County Dairy Farmers over 70 years old. In his younger years, Herbert played baseball as a catcher in a semi-pro baseball organization, the "Cross County League".
On November 5, 1935 in Cold Spring, NY, Herbert married Helen I. Heddy. Mrs. Cole predeceased him on November 22, 1990. He is survived by two daughters, Patricia H. Meddaugh of Wappingers Falls and Sharon I. Warren and her husband, Lyale, of LaGrangeville; four grandchildren, John Hughes, Susan Hughes, Shawn Warren and Eric Warren and his wife, Jesica; five great-grandchildren, Erica Hughes and her fiance, Ron Martinson, Jr., Nicholas Hughes, Lydia Hughes, Paige Warren and Cole Warren. He was predeceased by two sons, Willard Cole, who died in 1943 and Frederick H. Cole, who died October 31, 2004; a sister, Marion Olmstead and a brother, Donald Cole.
Calling hours will be held on Friday, July 24th from 2 to 4 & 7 to 9 p.m. at the Robert H. Auchmoody Funeral Homes, Inc., 900 Rt. 82, Hopewell Junction. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 25th at 10 a.m. at the funeral home followed by burial at Fishkill Rural Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the LaGrange Rescue Squad or the Mt. Hope Grange.
