Another evidence of what perseverance, hard work and pluck can do is illustrated in the life of William O. Murray, senior member of the firm of Murray & King, general merchants of Floresville, Texas. In him is found a man whose business career is a decidedly interesting one, showing the competency which can soon be attained when energy and industry are brought to bear. Mr. Murray was born in Versailles, Mo., in 1857, and he is a son of Asa W. and N. A. Murray, the parents natives of North Carolina and Missouri respectively. The father, who had been a dealer in general merchandise, came to the Lone Star State in 1859 and settled on a farm on the Cibolo River, where he made his home until 1882, when he was elected Sheriff and Collector of Wilson County, and then he came to Floresville, and is now engaged in business in this city. William Owen Murray was reared in this State and received his scholastic training in the common schools and by his own exertions. When twenty-one years of age he branched out for himself us a clerk, and later was Deputy County Clerk for County Clerk Hughes for several years. He then resigned. In 1888 he engaged in business for himself with Mr. Foster, under the firm name of Murray & Foster, general merchants, and that partnership lasted one year. Then Mr. Murray bought out his partner's interest and conducted the business alone until September 22, 1890, when bis store was burned and he lost nearly all his stock of goods. All the business buildings owned by him were destroyed by the fire at that date. Following this Mr. Murray made arrangements to immediately rebuild, also to admit Mr. Henry C. King as partner. The building is brick, 31x70 feet, two stories high, both floors being used by the firm in their retail business, and there are two warehouses for storage. These enterprising young business men carry a stock valued at $13,000, and they do an annual business of about $40,000. Their stock is composed of dry goods, groceries, farm implements, farming tools, wagons, etc., and, in fact, all goods for a general store. Mr. Murray bought the first car-load of wagons in 1886, and in 1887 the first cultivator that was ever brought to Wilson County. This firm has one of the best arranged and tastiest stores in the place, and both are pleasant, agreeable business men. In October, 1883, Mr. Murray was married to Miss Ella Peacock, a native of Texas, and the daughter of Thomas Peacock, an early settler of this State. Five children are the fruits of this union: Mattie, Ida May, Laura, William O., Jr., and DeWitt. The family hold membership in the Presbyterian Church, in which our subject is deacon. He is a member of the Masonic Fraternity, Floresville Lodge No. 515, and was Secretary of the same for several years.
