Swifty was one of our dogs like Poopay and Susy,as we were growing up , actually he was my pet till I married and moved to Tennessee with my hubby so after that he was mom and dads dog and I would see him when we would go back and forth to Michigan for trips.
I got him in 1963 from a friend from school , her dog had a litter of them around 9 puppies in the litter. Anyway we got a couple of them and one went to our sis and her family and we kept Swifty. The way we named him was I told mom that he had the markings of a Jersey cow and I thought he looked swift so mom started calling him Swifty. Am not sure what breed of dog he was but he was very loveable around little ones , he loved to play with balls , loved his treats and followed mom all over the house , she even let him sleep on the furniture till he couldnt jump up anymore. Dad had him put to sleep because Swifty was in alot of pain from his arthritis. Mom was very upset with dad that day because he didnt tell her he was going to the vets and what he was going to do, but Dad knew how mom would react worse if she went with them . so he didnt tell her and she took out her grief on him. Dad just took it in his stride , cause he loved Swifty too, and he hurt also when Swifty passed. They had another dog at that same time a Dachound so mom and dad put all their love with Cupie so they wouldnt feel lonely and miss Swifty so much but it was still hard I still miss him to this day myself.

If it should be that I grow weak,
And pain should keep me from my sleep,
Then you must do what must be done,
for this last battle cannot be won.

You will be sad, I understand
Don't let your grief then stay your hand
for this day,
more than all the rest.

We've had so many happy years.
What is to come can hold no fears.
You'd not want me to suffer so,
The time has come - please let me go.

Take me where my need they'll tend,
And please stay with me till the end.
Hold me firm and speak to me,
Until my eyes no longer see

I know in time that you will see
The kindness that you did for me,
Although my tail its last has waved,
From pain and suffering i've been saved.

Please do not grieve - it must be you
who had this painful thing to do.
We've been so close, we two, these years;
Don't let your heart hold back its tears.

I borrowed the poem from another Findagraver. Thought it was very dear.

A PET'S TEN COMMANDMENTS . . .

1. My life is likely to last 10-15 years. Any separation from you is likely to be painful.
2. Give me time to understand what you want of me. 3. Place your trust in me. It is crucial for my well-being. 4. Don't be angry with me for long and don't lock me up as punishment. You have your work, your friends, your entertainment, but I have only you. 5. Talk to me. Even if I don't understand your words, I do understand your voice when speaking to me. 6. Be aware that however you treat me, I will never forget it. 7. Before you hit me, before you kick me, remember that I could hurt you, and yet, I choose not to bite you. 8. Before you scold me for being lazy or uncooperative, ask yourself if something might be bothering me. Perhaps I'm not getting the right food, I have been in the sun too long, or my heart might be getting old or weak. 9. Please take care of me when I grow old. You too, will grow old. 10. On the ultimate difficult journey, go with me please. Never say you can't bear to watch. Don't make me face this alone. Everything is easier for me if you are there, because I love you so. ~ Take a moment today to thank the universe for your pets. Enjoy and take good care of them. Life would be a much duller, less joyful experience without God's critters.~ Now please pass this on to other pet owners. We do not have to wait for Heaven to be surrounded by hope, love, and joyfulness. It's right here on earth and has four legs!
