He had one sister:
Bessie Jane Long Ralls
and two brothers:
John Samuel Long
Robert Lee Long
After his mother Mary Ellen Humphreys Long died in 1894, Burton's father remarried, which provided him with seven half siblings.
Burton met and married Maria Augusta Todd April 4th, 1915, in Grundy County. To their union they had one daughter,
Mary Cleo Long Chiatovich.
Burton's wife Maria developed breast cancer and died in 1923. Burton remarried Della Opal Miller May 19, 1926 in Chillicothe, Livingston County, Missouri. To their union, two more daughters were born:
Opal Fern Long Clauz and
Phyllis Long Fulks.
Throughout his life, Burton had a variety of means to support his family. He was a farmer first, a job passed down by generations of his family. He later left the farm to become a telegraph operator and agent for the Milwaukee Railroad. He was further employed by other railroads as well. He retired from the railroad, and went on to becoming the owner and operator of the Prairie Dale Farm, which was south of Milan. He expanded his farm business into Milan and became a popular grocer and dairyman. After retiring from these, being the honest and trustworthy man he was, he became a Judge of the Sullivan County Court, Western District, and served two terms.
Burton became ill on April 27th, 1957 and was admitted to Grim Smith Hospital and Clinic, where he died within 24 hours, due to coronary thrombosis - a blood clot in the heart.
