During the Great Depression, Joe spent 4 years with the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) working in Mathis and and Kenedy, Texas. A year after he married Katie, the family lived and ran a ranch near Bandera, Texas for 6 years before moving to San Antonio in 1948. Joe was a 52 year member of The Grand Lodge Order of Hermann Sons, a 51 year member of St. Benedict's Catholic Church, and he retired after 34 years from Sweeney & Company Grocery Supply. He also loved bowling and fishing.
