Michael the son of Robert G. Mellon and Helen M. Mellon of New Berlin Wisconsin enlisted in the US marine Corps June 28 1967 in Milwaukee WI. In Vietnam he was assigned to and served with Company H, 2d Battalion, 4th Marines, 3d MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

During the month of August with the termination of Operation CANTON II, the Battalion resumed normal operations form FSB (Fire Support Base) Cates in northern Quang Tri Province. During the latter half of the month Company H was positioned on Hill 691 in Huong Hoa District and on August 25, the Marines were hit with a barrage of 60mm and 82mm mortar by the NVA that wounded eleven Marines. One of the casualties was Cpl Michael Mellon who was evacuated to the US Naval Hospital Ship, the USS Repose where he died from the injuries he had sustained from the hostile mortar fire.
