My grandmother Brita Franck was born in Klovan, Bjuråker, Hälsingland, Sweden. She came to the US at the age of 5, with her mother and two older sisters. Her name was changed to Bessie Franklin. She married my grandfather Harry Ward Davis and they lived in St. Vincent. Her 5 children were born and raised there.
Bessie was never very robust. She suffered from TB for many years. In 1918 she got the flu. Though she lived for 5 more years, she was bedridden most of the time. My mother was her youngest child, and was rarely allowed to "bother" her mother, so she really never knew her very well.
Bessie died when all 5 children were teenagers, leaving my grandfather to raise them alone with the help of hired girls. She was the one love of his life, and he never remarried, remaining a widower for just 3 days short of 48 years. Now they are buried side by side.
