Shot down on 9 October 1942 in B-24D-1-CO Liberator #41-23678 'Big Eagle'/'Bathtub Bessie'. Plane attacked by fighters on assigned target Lille I/A, France. The Liberator received direct hits to engine no. 4 and the bomb bay area before crashing near Lille, France. There were 6 killed in action, 1 evaded and 3 Prisoner of War (POW)s. No Missing Air Crew Report (MACR) for this loss. This was the first B-24 listed as MIA from the 8th Air Force.

1Lt Carl N Garrott was the Navigator of a B-24D-1-CO Liberator aircraft with Tail # 41-23678 and Nicknamed: Bathtub Bessie that was shot down while on a mission to Lille, France. He was assigned to the 330th Bombardment Squadron, 93rd Bombardment Group (Heavy), 20th Combat Bombardment Wing, 2nd Bombardment Division, 8th Air Force, Station 102, Alconbury Airfield, Huntingdonshire, England. Some remains that were recovered could not be positively identified, therefore, those remains are interred with three other of his crewmembers at Section R Site 151, Fort McPherson National Cemetery, Maxwell, Nebraska
